Staff Correspondent: Shah Alam, president of the Tangail district unit of Jatiyatabadi Tantidal, died at Tangail Medical College Hospital yesterday afternoon. He was 70.
He died around 2:30pm while undergoing treatment, family sources said.
Tangail-5 lawmaker and State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku expressed deep shock at his death.
In a condolence message, Tuku described Shah Alam as a committed follower of Bangladeshi nationalism and the ideals of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
“His death is an irreparable loss to the Tangail district BNP,” he said.
Tuku said Shah Alam had actively taken part in various democratic movements under the leadership of Ziaur Rahman, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, including the 2024 mass uprising.
He prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Shah Alam had been suffering from health complications after being injured in a fall recently. His condition worsened on Monday, when he was admitted to the hospital.
Doctors said he had suffered a heart attack.
A resident of Thanapara in Tangail town, Shah Alam is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter and numerous relatives and well-wishers.
