Rabindra University on Thursday observed the 85th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore with a series of programmes, including the laying of floral wreaths, a seminar and a cultural event.
The programmes were held under the overall supervision of Vice-Chancellor Prof Tahmina Akhtar.
The observance began at 10:00am with the laying of wreaths in honour of the Nobel laureate. Among those present were Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Abdus Sobahan, the acting proctor, chairpersons of different departments, hall provosts, house tutors, teachers, students, officers and employees of the university. Prof Dr Momen Rosul of the Department of Bangla at the University of Dhaka also attended the ceremony.
A seminar and a cultural programme, organised by the university’s Department of Music, followed the tribute.
Chaired by Debashree Dolan, chairperson of the Department of Music, the seminar was attended by Prof Dr Md Abdus Sobahan as the chief guest, while Prof Dr Momen Rosul addressed the event as the keynote speaker.
Speaking at the programme, Prof Sobahan said Rabindranath Tagore was not only a towering figure in Bengali literature and culture but also a symbol of universal humanism whose literary works, philosophy and educational ideals continue to inspire people across generations.
He said the establishment of Rabindra University was rooted in the vision of promoting research, education and the practice of Tagore’s philosophy and ideals.
Urging students to uphold Tagore’s non-communal, humane and creative values, he said they should take a leading role in building a progressive and inclusive society.
The pro-vice-chancellor also said the university would continue to expand research, academic activities, seminars and cultural programmes to preserve and promote Tagore’s philosophy and cultural legacy for future generations.
