Tehran says Yemen escalation benefits ‘only’ Israel; Iran proposes dialogue in Yemen and offers to help Saudi Arabia in the mediation with the Houthis

International desk: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei says Tehran is “deeply concerned about developments in the Arabian Peninsula”, adding the escalation “will only benefit the Israeli regime”.

“We believe continued escalation will only benefit the Israeli regime, and we do not want hostilities to continue between two Muslim countries, especially as the region is already facing tensions caused by the United States and Israel,” he has said at a news briefing.

“We have consistently stressed that the people of Yemen have the right to live with dignity, free from pressure, sanctions and blockade. What they have endured over the past 10 to 12 years is unjustifiable under both Islamic principles and international law.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, has conveyed to his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, that “there is no military solution” to the conflicts in the Middle East. In this context, he has expressed support for “dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen” and has raised the possibility of Tehran acting as a mediator with the Houthi rebels, responsible for numerous attacks against Saudi territory, particularly against the airport in Riyadh, the capital.

“Insisting on a military approach and dismissing a political solution will complicate the current situation,” Araqchi has pointed out, who has emphasized that “there is no military solution to the crises in the region.” According to an official statement, Tehran has indicated that both delegations have “exchanged views on the situation in the region.”

During the meeting, Araqchi has conveyed that Tehran “is willing to provide any assistance to facilitate the start of a dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, as well as to contribute to reaching a political solution,” despite the repeated accusations linking the Houthis to Iran.

In contrast, the Saudi Foreign Ministry has offered a much shorter version of the meeting, limiting itself to stating that “they have addressed the recent escalation in the region and the efforts being made in this regard.”

That same Monday, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baqaei, has warned that any increase in tension in the area “only benefits Israel” and has expressed his “deep concern over the recent events in the Arabian Peninsula.”

In this line, he has reiterated that Tehran maintains its willingness to act as a mediator and has emphasized that the country “does not wish to see confrontations between Muslim countries, especially when the region is already facing tensions caused by the United States and Israel.”

“We have reiterated time and again that the people of Yemen must fight to live with dignity and be freed from pressure, sanctions, and blockade. What has persisted for the last ten or twelve years is unjustifiable under Islamic principles and International Law,” the spokesperson has added, insisting on the need for a political solution to the Yemeni conflict.
