BNP cyber wing leader held over Radda centre attack

Dhaka: A senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Cyber Party has been arrested over the attack, looting and subsequent demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1, police said yesterday.

Sazzad Hossain Mishu Molla, 36, vice-president of the BNP’s cyber wing, was arrested during a police operation in Mirpur, said Mohammad Rakib Khan, deputy commissioner of the Detective Branch’s Mirpur division.

“Sazzad Hossain Mishu Molla was arrested for his involvement in the Radda centre attack. Further legal action is under way,” the DB official said.

Sazzad is a former member of the founding committee of the Shah Ali thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. He currently serves as vice-president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Cyber Party.

The arrest comes amid a political controversy surrounding the attack, following allegations that BNP reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Misty was involved in the incident.

Misty resigned from parliament on October 1 after reportedly being directed to step down by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 came under attack late on September 24. The facility was vandalised and looted, and heavy machinery was later used to demolish the health centre.

Police are investigating the incident and the alleged involvement of other individuals.
