Dhaka: A clash broke out between higher secondary students of Dhaka College and Dhanmondi Ideal College in Science Lab area on Sunday, disrupting traffic on a major road.
The confrontation began around 11:30AM, with students from the two institutions chasing and counter-chasing each other.
Meanwhile, police fired two rounds of tear gas shells in an attempt to bring the situation under control.
Witnesses said some students threw bricks and stones at police during the confrontation. Police subsequently moved to contain the situation.
Shawkat Ali, additional deputy commissioner of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said the clash began after around 200 Dhaka College students moved towards Ideal College.
The confrontation brought traffic between Mirpur and New Market to a complete halt.
The immediate reason behind the clash could not be confirmed, Shawkat Ali, added.
