Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained ‘more than 300 activists of the Awami League’ from the main office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal- JASAD at Gulistan’s GPO intersection in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.
Police said they detained them at about 3:00pm while they were allegedly holding a secret meeting under the banner of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned.
‘We have initially taken them into police custody. Legal action will be taken after verifying the information about them,’ he said.
Earlier, Jasad alleged that its central representatives’ meeting at the party office was attacked during the programme, and several leaders and activists were injured in the attack.
The meeting began at about 10:40am at Shaheed Colonel Taher Auditorium, with participation of designated representatives from different district, metropolitan and upazila units of the organisation.
Jasad office secretary Sazzad Hossain said BNP-affiliated activists carried out a sudden attack during the meeting, injuring several JASAD leaders and activists.
He also alleged that police detained many people from the spot following the attack.
