Tangail Correspondent: Eight hundred and fifty students who secured GPA-5 in the SSC and equivalent examinations in Tangail Sadar were honoured at a reception hosted by State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku on Friday.
The reception, organised at Bindubasini Government Boys’ High School at 10:00am, was arranged at the minister’s personal initiative.
Addressing the students, Tuku said he had organised the event for the second consecutive year and would continue the initiative in the future.
“The success of meritorious students should inspire others to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals,” he said.
Urging students to stay away from drugs, terrorism and juvenile gangs, the state minister described drug abuse as one of the most serious challenges facing society.
He called on the younger generation to help build a peaceful and secure society free from drugs, violence and gang culture.
“Good results alone are not enough. Students must develop knowledge, skills, moral values and patriotism to become responsible citizens,” he said.
Education system needs revitalisation
Speaking to reporters after the event, Tuku said Tangail was once widely regarded as an education hub, but the previous government had brought the country’s education system to the brink of collapse.
The present government was working to revitalise the sector and improve educational standards, he said.
“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has accorded the highest priority to education,” Tuku said, adding that students were also being encouraged to participate in sports, cultural activities and other extracurricular programmes.
Asked about the 11-party long march, he said political parties had the right to organise programmes in a democratic country, while the people would decide whether such actions were justified.
On the energy sector, Tuku said the government was making concerted efforts to revive the oil and gas sector, which, he claimed, had been pushed towards destruction during the previous government’s tenure.
Students receive certificates, gifts
The students were welcomed with roses and tuberoses before receiving certificates and crests from the state minister. They were also given college bags, key rings and other gifts.
Mohammad Fahad Hossain, founder of Fahad’s Tutorial and an online educator, spoke on academic preparation, goal-setting and career planning.
Meftaul Alam Siam, who stood first in the BUET admission test, and Jahangir Alam Shanto, who topped the medical admission test, shared their success strategies and career advice.
Professor Dr J Ali, head of the Department of Business Administration at Presidency University, delivered the welcome speech.
Tangail Superintendent of Police Md Shamsul Alam Sarker, former district BNP member-secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu, Additional Superintendent of Police HM Mahbub Rizuane Siddiqui, government officials, teachers, guardians, local dignitaries and journalists attended the programme.
Dr Jobaidur Rahman Jony coordinated the event, which ended with a raffle draw.
