A sub-inspector of the Special Branch (SB) of police was beaten to death allegedly following a dispute over parking a private car in Savar’s Aminbazar area on Saturday night.
The deceased, Altaf Hossain, 58, was posted at the SB’s Malibagh zone in Dhaka. His younger son, Ariful Islam, 26, was also seriously injured in the attack.
The incident took place around 8:00pm in the Boro Deshi area of Aminbazar, police said.
According to eyewitnesses and police, Altaf and Ariful were involved in an altercation with a group of 10 to 15 people outside a T-shirt factory in the Madina Housing area over the parking of a private car.
The argument soon turned violent, with the group allegedly attacking and beating the father and son.
The injured duo were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka around 9:30pm. Doctors there declared Altaf dead.
Altaf was the son of late Jurain Ali Sheikh of Sadhupada village under Enayetpur Police Station in Sirajganj. He lived with his family in the Madina City area of Boro Deshi.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Alam confirmed the death, saying police were investigating the incident.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Parvin said the incident appeared to have stemmed from a minor dispute over parking near Altaf’s home.
“Altaf and his son were attacked when they intervened to settle a dispute between the two sides,” she said, adding that police were trying to arrest those involved.
Masud Rana, an assistant sub-inspector of the SB’s Savar zone, said Altaf owned a plot of land in Aminbazar and was posted at an SB zone in Dhaka.
He said the exact motive for the killing was not immediately clear.
Police said they were working to identify those involved and bring them to justice.
