Dhaka: The government on Thursday proposed the submission of mandatory a tax identification number or TIN certificate for opening bank accounts starting in the 2026-27 financial year.
Finance minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the measure on Thursday while unveiling a record Tk 9.38 lakh crore national budget in the parliament.
Under the new proposal, anyone opening a bank account must submit a TIN certificate, though the government will exempt student accounts, no-frills accounts and individuals cleared through official National Board of Revenue gazette notifications.
The policy shift will impact a massive financial network, as Bangladesh Bank data showed that the country’s total banking accounts reached 17.79 crore at the end of December 2025.
To enforce the mandate and curb tax evasion, the government is launching a Central Data Integration system.
This digital network will directly link the NBR database with the National Identity Card system, commercial banks, utility service providers, sub-registry offices and other key institutions to ensure seamless, real-time information sharing.
