BSF detains two Bangladeshi cops at Cumilla border

Cumilla: India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has detained two members of Bangladesh Police after they allegedly crossed into Indian territory while chasing suspected drug traffickers along the border in Cumilla’s Brahmanpara upazila.

The incident took place around 10:30pm on Thursday near border pillar No. 2059 in the Ashabari area of Shashidal union.

The detained officers are Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Imran Ahmed and Constable Rohit Marma of Brahmanpara Police Station. Rohit joined the station only a few days ago.

Brahmanpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Faruk Hossain confirmed the incident.

According to police, the two officers were on night duty and had travelled to the border area in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to conduct a drug recovery operation. When suspected drug traffickers fled after spotting the police, Constable Rohit chased them and allegedly crossed into Indian territory near border pillar No. 2059.

Indian residents detained Rohit, police said. When ASI Imran attempted to secure his colleague’s release, he was also detained. The two officers were later handed over to the BSF.

OC Faruk Hossain said Rohit, who was unfamiliar with the area, lost his way while pursuing a suspected drug trafficker towards a house near the border.

“Senior officials are holding discussions to bring the two police personnel back,” he said.

The commander in charge of Shashidal Border Outpost declined to comment when contacted about the incident.
