Cautionary signal No. 1 for riverports in 8 regions

Dhaka: Riverports in eight regions have been advised to hoist cautionary signal No. 1 as rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty or squally winds of 45-60 kilometres per hour are likely until 1:00am on Saturday.

The regions are Rangpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, Cumilla and Sylhet, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

In its Inland Riverport Warning issued on Friday, the weather office said the warning took effect at 3:00pm on Friday and would remain in force until 1:00am on October 10.

The forecast of strong winds and thunderstorms prompted the advisory for riverports in the eight regions to hoist cautionary signal No. 1.

The expected gusty or squally winds could pose risks to river vessels, particularly smaller boats operating on inland waterways. Sudden changes in weather conditions can also affect visibility and make navigation difficult.

River vessels operating in the affected areas may face rough conditions during periods of thunderstorms and strong winds. Operators and passengers are therefore advised to remain alert and follow the relevant weather warnings.

The BMD issues inland riverport warnings to alert river transport operators to potentially hazardous weather conditions and help them take necessary precautions.

The warning covers the period from Friday afternoon to early Saturday, with the possibility of rain or thundershowers and winds reaching 45-60kph in the eight regions.

Riverport authorities and vessel operators should remain attentive to official updates as weather conditions may change.
