Tangail: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock and Tangail-5 MP Sultan Salahuddin Tuku on Friday vowed to mobilise the people against what he described as conspiracies and attempts to destabilise the country.
“If anyone tries to create disorder on the streets and undermine the country’s stability, they will be given a fitting reply,” he said. Tuku was speaking as the chief guest at a rally organised by the Tangail district BNP at Shaheed Smriti Poura Udyan on Friday afternoon.
The rally was held to protest what BNP leaders described as “planned acts of violence aimed at destabilising the country”. In his speech, Tuku accused a group he described as “fascist” of attempting to destabilise Bangladesh after being driven out of power.
“They have committed enforced disappearances, killings, torture and repression. They killed people and opened fire indiscriminately. Now they are trying to destabilise the country in various ways,” he said.
He alleged that the group had yet to realise why it was forced to leave the country and had not apologised to the nation. “Can you do politics in Bangladesh through such conspiracies? You cannot. The people of this country drove you out, and the people will resist you,” he said.
Referring to the BNP’s prolonged political movement, Tuku accused the previous government of “destroying the country” and said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman was now responsible for running the state from the “ruins” left behind.
He warned that attempts to undermine the BNP would not succeed, saying the party had fought for years for voting rights and democracy. “Those who have conspired against the people’s demands and rights have eventually become isolated from the people,” he said.
Tuku urged BNP leaders and activists to remain vigilant, recalling the party’s 17-year movement on the streets. “Those who create disorder on the streets will be given a fitting reply with the people by our side,” he said.
He also urged party activists to remain alert against what he termed “evil forces” and said the BNP would continue its organisational activities while supporting the government in running the country.
At the same time, he said, the party would continue working for the development and welfare of the people. The rally was chaired by Tangail district BNP President Hasanuzzamil Shaheen and moderated by former district BNP Member Secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu.
The programme began with Quran recitation. Leaders and activists of the district BNP and its affiliated and associate organisations joined the rally in separate processions.
District BNP Organising Secretary Kazi Shafiqul Rahman Liton, former Joint Convener Amal Banerjee, former Organising Secretaries Ashraf Paheli and Shafikur Rahman Khan Shafik, former district JCD and Jubo Dal president Ahmedul Haque Shatil, district Sramik Dal General Secretary AKM Monirul Haque, Tangail Sadar upazila BNP Senior Joint Secretary Advocate Azimuddin Biplob, Jubo Dal Acting Member Secretary Zahid Hossain Mala, district Mohila Dal President Nilufa Yasmin and district JCD Convener Durjoy Hor Shuvo, among others, attended the rally.
Leaders and activists from district, upazila and municipal BNP units, as well as JCD, Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, Mohila Dal and other affiliated organisations, were also present.
