Dipu Moni releases on parole to attend husband’s funeral

Dhaka: Former minister Dr Dipu Moni, a leader of the Awami League whose activities remain banned, was released on 12-hour parole from Munshiganj District Jail this morning to attend the funeral of her husband.

She was taken from Munshiganj Jail to Dhaka in a van under tight police security at 6:15am on Thursday.

“She was released on parole at 6:15am and is being taken to Dhaka in a prison police van,” Md Hashem Reza, acting jailer of Munshiganj District Jail, told media.

Yesterday, Dipu Moni’s daughter, Tani Dipabali, submitted an application to the deputy commissioner of Munshiganj yesterday seeking parole for her mother. Authorities later granted Dipu Moni a 12-hour parole from 6:00am to 6:00pm today.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, her lawyer, Gazi Faisal Islam, said Dipu Moni would visit her residence in Dhaka’s Kalabagan after her release to pay her last respects to her husband. The namaz-e-janaza is scheduled to be held at Azad Mosque, after which he will be laid to rest at Banani Graveyard.

Tawfique Nawaz died at around 10:30pm on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital in Dhaka’s Gulshan. He was 76.

A Supreme Court lawyer, Tawfique Nawaz had long been suffering from kidney and liver complications.
